Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Sei Whales, Sperm Whales, Orcas (Killer Whales), Dolphins, Flying Fish, Turtles, Manta Rays and Whale Sharks could all be seen during a whale watching trip a few miles from Hikkaduwa.

There is a migration of Whales between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian sea which takes them through the seas of southern Sri Lanka. Blue Whales are the largest living animals on Earth—indeed, the largest animals that ever lived. Growing to a length of 27 m and weighing some 150 tons, a single Blue Whale weighs the equivalent of 50 elephants or three of the largest dinosaurs. Blue Whales are filter feeders, lacking teeth but sporting enormous plates of thickened horny skin hanging from rods of their mouths, known baleen plates. In a single mouthful, they can sieve 40-60 tons of water.
